District 3300 Sitiawan

Chartered: 16th March 1961

Brief History

At an interest meeting held on Sunday 18th September 1960 at the Lumut Rest House, saw the first step towards the formation of the Rotary Club of Sitiawan. The late Rtn Lau Hun Chiong, then the District Governor's Representative, with five Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Ipoh (our sponsor Club) were present to help us plan and organize a new Rotary Club, the 4th Rotary Club in Perak and the 28th Club in RI District 330 which in the 1960s covered 7 countries - Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Brunei.

At an election of office bearers, Dr Ling Sing Hang was elected the pro tem president to lead the Provisional Rotary Club of Sitiawan.

With 20 members we met regularly on Mondays at the Lumut Rest House. While still a provisional club we carried out several community service projects.

On 16th March 1961 we received our charter from RI. At a well attended dinner function the late Tuan Mustapha Albakri, District Governor of RI District 330 installed Dr Ling Sing Hang the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Sitiawan.

In our early and fledging years few of us knew Rotary well. We had lean times, but persevered and steadfastly held on to the Ideals of Rotary. Looking back today we see our modest record of Rotary service spanning 35 years.

Today there are still two Charter members in our club with an unbroken service record since our inception in March, 1961 - Rtns P.C. Balachandran PHF and Moses Tay Moh Seh PHF. These two doyens who have tarried long and served well, provide the link between past and present.

Of late, many young men have joined the club and have brought in with them vigor and vitality. Since man's time began, there has always been a spirit of moving upward. This is our quest, to move forward and upward to a time when we would have a solid and vibrant body of 20 & 20 service-minded men and women mustard keen and hell-bent on helping and serving their country, community and their fellow men.
